“Our defensive line could be the best on Long Island.”

If there’s one thing you can count on heading into the 2018 Section 11 Football season, it’s the William Floyd Colonials are going to be a force to be reckon with on the defensive line.

With two returning all-county lineman in Keith Winfrey and Gary Anderson, Head Coach Paul Longo expects the third pass rusher to quickly reek havoc on opposing linemen. “P.K. Kite is a tremendous athlete who has a great chance at giving us three all-county defensive linemen this season,” Coach Longo said.

Winfrey has already fielded offers to play collegiately from Boston College, Maine, and New Hampshire. Another all-county year could mean even more schools wanting to recruit the 6’3’’ senior’s skillset.

The Colonials ended the 2017 season where everybody wants to be, at Stony Brook University in the Division 1 County finals. After losing 35-12 to Lindenhurst, William Floyd was sent home waiting until next year to go after the title again.

Along with a stellar defensive line, William Floyd will have most of their skill players back. Senior Quarterback Mack Driver returns under center after playing some Wide Receiver last year. Nick Silva also returns to play Running Back and Linebacker for the Colonials.

“Driver is a big guy at 6’2’’ 225 who can run and throw, and with Nicky Silva in the backfield, we have two dangerous weapons running the ball,“ Longo said.

The biggest change on the field for William Floyd heading into this season will be there offensive line. “We lost basically our entire offensive line,” Longo said. “We have a bunch a young guys who are going to be good, they just have to get stronger and more experienced.”

William Floyd has been at the top of the Section 11, Division 1 standings for the ladder portion of 20 years. So making the county finals is business as usual for Coach Longo.

“We’re going to be facing some tough teams like Longwood, Ward Melville, and Patchogue- Medford, but we’d be very disappointed if we didn’t make a strong playoff run this season.”
