Stony Brook Lacrosse Programs Split Games at UMBC

The Stony Brook men’s and women’s lacrosse programs took the field against an America East rival for the first time since May 2019, on Friday March 5th and Saturday, March 6th, respectively. The results were mixed.

The No.5-ranked Stony Brook women’s team defeated the UMBC Retrievers, 15-8, Friday evening. However, the men’s program dropped its conference opener, 13-12, despite forcing quadruple-overtime.

Both games took place at UMBC Stadium in Baltimore, M.D.

UMBC 13, Stony Brook 12 (MLAX, 4-OT)

The Stony Brook team needed its defense to step up on the man-down disadvantage in with seven seconds remaining in overtime period-four. The Seawolves already prevented the Retrievers from scoring with the man-advantage in the prior OT-period, but surrendered a man-down goal in the first.

Despite Stony Brook burning out most of the penalty clock, freshman attacker Nick Dupuis found an opening on the right window and snuck a shot past junior goaltender Anthony Palma. The shot rolled into the back of the net, giving UMBC the victory Saturday afternoon.

The Seawolves almost missed out on playing in overtime after giving up their 9-7 third period lead. The Stony Brook team surrendered four-consecutive goals before junior midfielder Matt Anderson cut its deficit to one with over seven minutes remaining. With seven seconds to go, freshman attackman Dylan Pallonetti found graduate Cory Vanginhoven for the equalizer.

Tom Haun led the way for Stony Brook by earning a hat trick. He finished the day with 102 career-goals and became the eighth Seawolf to hit triple-digits in the category.

Stony Brook dropped its first overtime decision of the season after winning all three in 2020. Saturday’s contest was the program’s first conference game coached by Anthony Gilardi. The game was the longest played at the division-I level in program history

Stony Brook 15, UMBC 8 (WLAX)

The Stony Brook team found the net quickly and often in the first half Friday evening. Graduate attacker Taryn Ohlmiller kickstarted the Seawolves offense with a goal 3:02 into the game. Less than a minute later, she followed it up with another score.

The Seawolves scored six-straight goals through the game’s first 23 minutes before freshman attacker Dymin Gerow put the Retrievers on the board. However, Ohlmiller responded by earning a hat trick off her third goal of the half. Stony Brook outshot its rivals on goal 19-4 and took a 9-1 lead into the locker room.

UMBC found the back of the net on two of the first three goals scored opening up the second half. But, Stony Brook responded with by scoring four unanswered, taking the 14-4 lead and starting the rolling clock. That helped the Seawolves secure the victory despite surrendering four of the five goals scored in the final 13 minutes of action.

Freshman goalkeeper Hayley Hunt had her first collegiate start against UMBC, in-place of junior Kameron Halsall. Hunt allowed all eight goals and made six saves while earning her first collegiate victory.

Ohlmiller led the game with five goals and added an assist in the victory. The defending America East champions extended their winning streak to 43-straight wins over conference rivals.

Both programs will wrap up its road stretch against non-conference opponents this week. The men’s team will face the top-10 ranked Syracuse Orange on Friday, March 12 at 1 p.m. in Syracuse, NY. It will be the first time both team’s face each other in program history.

The women’s team will take on the Towson Tigers on Sunday, March 14 at 1 p.m. in Towson, M.D.
